Opposing the occupation, supporting BDS: the new members of Congress who will give Netanyahu a headache - voila! news

All the members of the "Squad", the progressive camp in the Democratic Party, who were elected in the elections to the US House of Representatives are under the age of 40. They support universal health insurance and the ambitious plan to combat the climate crisis. As far as Israel is concerned, they are known for their strong opposition to the occupation and support for the Palestinians and the boycott movement

The rumors about the decline of the progressive camp in the Democratic Party were exaggerated in light of the results in the mid-term elections held yesterday (Tuesday) - which may perhaps disappoint the government in Israel.

The progressive candidates managed to secure themselves a new line of elected officials.

According to preliminary samples, four of them recorded impressive achievements in the race for the House of Representatives: Maxwell Frost in Florida, Dalia Ramirez in Illinois, Greg Cesar in Texas and Summer Lee in Pennsylvania.

In the last two election cycles, the progressive democrat group - which even received the nickname "the squad" (the unit) - recorded great victories.

Four of them were elected in the elections to the United States House of Representatives held in 2018, and two more were elected in the 2020 elections: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who represents the fourteenth congressional district of the state of New York, Ilhan Omar who represents the fifth congressional district of the state of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley who represents the The Seventh Congressional District of the State of Massachusetts, Rashida Taleb who represents the Thirteenth Congressional District of the State of Michigan, Jamal Bowman who represents the Sixteenth Congressional District of the State of New York and Cory Bush who represents the First Congressional District of the State of Missouri.

All six are non-white under the age of 50.

Frost, Ramirez, Cesar and Lee fit the demographic profile of the 2018 and 2020 "Squad" - all under the age of 40, support universal health insurance and the ambitious plan to combat the climate crisis, the "New Green Deal".

From the Israeli angle, the progressive Democrats oppose the occupation, support the Palestinians and the BDS boycott movement.

Maxwell Frost

Frost was elected the youngest member of the House of Representatives at the age of 25 and is known thanks to his activity against gun ownership in the "For Our Live" organization.

Frost took the seat from former Orlando Police Chief Val Demings, who dropped out of the race to run for a Senate seat.

Demings is considered a moderate Democrat from the more conservative camp of the party.

Summer said to me

Summer Lee, who won the Pittsburgh-area district, had to contend with huge sums of money given to her moderate opponents in the race by super PACs that don't want progressive Democrats in the House, including the American Israel Public Affairs Super Committee, which has poured millions of dollars into Democratic primaries ahead of the election. the middle, with the aim of driving Lee away - but without success.

Greg Cesar

Greg Cesar, a former Austin, Texas city councilman, also won.

Although Latino support for the Democrats in tonight's election suffered a severe blow, Cesar actually recorded a significant achievement.

In his campaign, he avoided controversial issues such as Israel, so as not to harm the funding he received from the super committees, similar to what happened to Lee.

The last candidate is Dalia Ramirez, who has served in the Illinois State House of Representatives for the past four years.

Ramirez won the House race relatively easily in Chicago's third district, which is predominantly Latino.

She also became the first Latina woman from a Midwestern state to be elected to Congress.

Progressive Democrats also made gains with the victory of Chris DeLosio, a former supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders, in Pennsylvania's 17th District.

He defeated Conor Lamb, who left his seat to run for the Senate, where he lost to his Democratic opponent John Peterman.

In Vermont, Becca Balint won, who received the support of Sanders, who promotes universal health insurance and the Green New Deal.

Jasmine Crockett won in Texas and registered another achievement for the progressive Democrats.

The results of the survey (photo: official website, Twitter)

A survey by the Pew Institute published in July shows that the majority of older Americans under the age of 30 do not hold a positive view of Israel.

While 55% of Americans think positively about Israel and 74% believe that US-Israel relations are in a good place.

This opinion varies significantly between the different age groups and political identification.

Most Republicans - 71% - view Israel positively, according to the survey, compared to 44% among Democrats.

56% of 18-29 year olds see Israel positively - while 61% of them see the Palestinians positively.
