Eleven of the 20 most popular small towns in Germany are in Bavaria.
The Middle Franconian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber secured third place.
Munich – It doesn't always have to be the metropolises when it comes to city trips.
Small towns in particular often exude a very special charm.
Picturesque and often less crowded, the small German towns are no longer an insider tip for city breaks.
At least since the travel portal
Travelcircus
has summarized the most beautiful representatives in a top 20 for the sixth time.
Bavaria can look forward to eleven places in this year's ranking.
The most popular small town in Germany is in Bavaria, not far from the Alps
Holiday photos are no longer just pasted into photo albums.
Now you want to show the world where you've been.
And so rows of holiday snapshots end up on social media platforms like Instagram.
A hashtag (#) is then often packed with the respective city that you have just visited.
And so the travel portal
Travelcircus has
also determined the most popular small towns in Germany.
The municipalities with the most mentions on Instagram lead the ranking.
1012 small towns were examined in this way.
It seems that the insider tips among the most popular small towns are no longer there, because nothing has changed in places one to nine compared to the previous year.
The undisputed leader is still the Swabian top travel destination Füssen (307,229 posts).
In addition to the proximity to the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, the Alpine panorama and the historic old town also offer some photo motifs.
Silver goes to the winter sports stronghold of Winterberg (273,893 posts) in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Bronze goes to Middle Franconia.
With Rothenburg ob der Tauber (188,000 posts), Bavaria secured two medals.

The Upper Franconian town of Kronach (120,857 posts) also made it into the top 10.
This year, the municipality made it over the 100,000 mark for the first time.
The Rosenberg Fortress is the top photo spot in Kronach.
The Upper Bavarian spa town of Bad Tölz is in tenth place and thus in the top spots for the first time.
With 103,150 posts, the six-figure figure was almost reached.
11th place | Burghausen (district of Altötting) | 101,936 posts |
12th place | Eichstätt (district of Eichstätt) | 100,068 posts |
13th place | Miltenberg (district of Miltenberg | 93,916 posts |
14th place | Nördlingen (Donau-Ries district) | 85,075 posts |
15th place | Dinkelsbühl (district of Ansbach) | 84,979 posts |
18th place | Dingolfing (District of Dingolfing-Landau) | 76,381 posts |
20th place | Donauwörth (Donau-Ries district) | 73,180 posts |
In summary, the hashtag trend is not letting up.
On the contrary, more and more holiday photos are provided with the respective city name.
This is particularly evident in the winners compared to 2021. Füssen, for example, was able to collect 40,331 more posts.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber still managed an increase of 29,620 posts.
The biggest loser, if one can speak of it at all, was the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Wörth am Rhein.
She dropped the most with 73 places and ended up at 425 instead of 352.
