San Casciano dei Bagni, in the south of Tuscany, in the province of Siena, remained far from the traditional circuits of cultural tourism.
That could change.
Geological research carried out for the renovation of the local urban plan led the municipality to authorize three years of excavations to a team of young archaeologists coordinated by the University for Foreigners of Siena.
They found an Etruscan and Roman sanctuary, located near an ancient sacred pool where boiling water still gushes from the Bagno Grande spring.
According to Jacopo Tabolli, coordinator of the excavations, this sanctuary would have been active between the 3rd century BC and the 5th century of the Christian era.
This place of prayer and care is a kind of Lourdes before its time, where the nobles bathed in hot water which they held sacred, dedicating statues and offerings to the gods for their healing.
