To try to climb the slope, the Italian left has chosen an outsider at the head of the Democratic Party: Elly Schlein, 37, Elena Ethel Schlein of her real name.
During Sunday's open primaries, left-wing voters decided, against all odds, to push a new line in the party which in fifteen years has lost more than 6 million votes, and seemed condemned to decline even if it weighed another 19% of the vote in the legislative elections in September.

For the first time in the history of the Democratic Party
,” notes political scientist Piero Ignazi of the University of Bologna,
voters have chosen a leader different from that chosen by its militants.
Stefano Bonaccini, 56, thirty of whom are in the service of the left, president of Emilia-Romagna, ex-communist recognized as a good administrator, had won 52.8% of the votes of the militants, 34.8% in favor of Elly Schlein.
But the latter has generated such enthusiasm that some voters who have been lost for ages have returned...
