The firefighters of the metropolis of Lyon were called this Monday shortly before 4:30 p.m. when a fire outbreak was reported to them in the Célestins theater located in the heart of the Lyon peninsula.
74 firefighters and 24 vehicles were mobilized on site.
The fire, now under control, took hold at the level of the machinery of an elevator on the ground floor before the smoke spread to the floors.
Thirty-five people had to be evacuated by the emergency services, which also cordoned off the area.
The old building, it dates from 1877 (the previous one built in 1792 having been completely destroyed in 1871 by a fire), did not facilitate the intervention of the firefighters.
Inspections are underway to understand the origin of the disaster and to assess the damage caused by this fire.
The theater will remain under surveillance for several days.
