"It's a senseless tragedy," says a city supervisor, "made worse by the fact that there are no suspects in custody." Millionaire Elon Musk calls for "strong" measures.

Bob Lee, the investor and technology executive who founded the Cash App payment app, was stabbed to death early Tuesday morning on a central San Francisco street, according to the local NBC News station and later confirmed by his family on social media.

Agents of the Police Department of the Californian city found a 43-year-old man with apparent stab wounds when responding to a stabbing report at 2:35 in the morning.

He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Police did not name the victim, but sources close to the case identified her as Lee, who was now working as a product manager for cryptocurrency firm MobileCoin.

"Bob was a force of nature. He helped birth Android and CashApp into our world," Joshua Goldbard, director of MobileCoin, told ABC News in San Francisco: "I will miss him every day."

Lee's father, Rick Lee, confirmed the death on the social network Facebook, according to The New York Times.

The incident is being investigated by the Homicide Department, and no arrests have been reported so far.

"This is a senseless tragedy that I know is made even worse by the fact that there are no suspects in custody," City Supervisor Matt Dorsey said on Twitter.

Homicides have grown slightly in recent years in San Francisco, going from 41 in 2019, the lowest number in 60 years, to 56 in 2022, according to the newspaper.

So far this year, and until April 2, 12 had been registered, compared to 22 in the same period of 2022.

Billionaire Elon Musk, founder of the Tesla company in California, said on the social network Twitter: "Many people I know have been seriously attacked. Violent crime in San Francisco is horrifying," he added, asking the city for action " stronger" against repeat offenders.
