The 80-year-old Democrat's candidacy indices are multiplying and the main unknown now seems to be the date of his official entry into the campaign.

Joe Biden has confirmed his plan to run for president in 2024, without his announcement being official yet.

During the Easter Egg Race on the White House lawn, an American tradition of pushing an egg with a wooden spoon, Biden told NBC that he intended "to organize at

least three or four other Easter feasts.

Maybe five, maybe six, who knows?

“Are you saying you are a candidate for the next election in 2024?

the journalist.

"I intend to run, but I'm not ready to announce it yet

," replied Joe Biden.

An announcement this summer?

This half-announcement is not the first time Biden has hinted that he intends to run for a second term, only pushing back the official announcement.

After suggesting he might do so during his State of the Union address last February, and then

“in the spring,”

unsourced reports from the White House suggest the president might do so this summer.

Biden, already the oldest president in American history, will turn 82 in November 2024.

After unexpectedly avoiding a massive defeat by Republicans in the midterm elections last November, Biden had hinted at a second term .

Biden also recently imposed on the Democratic Party a reform of the primary calendar, putting South Carolina ahead of Iowa.

Biden's 2020 candidacy suffered a bitter setback in Iowa, before being saved by support from South Carolina and black voters a few weeks later.

The new schedule ensures Biden an early victory in the primaries, and it's rare that an incumbent president faces serious competition from within his own party in the primaries.

Trump already campaigning

The US presidential campaign was launched prematurely by Donald Trump's candidacy announcement last November.

Since then, other Republican candidates have declared themselves, such as Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina and ambassador to the United Nations, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former governor of Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson.

Trump remains his party's big favorite for now, and has used his recent indictment to raise funds and establish his dominance.

On the Democratic side, Robert Kennedy Junior, a lawyer specializing in environmental issues, notorious anti-vaccine activist and nephew of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, filed a candidacy file last week.

Marianne Williamson, author of self-help books, also launched her campaign in March.

If he has not yet declared himself, Biden has already, according to the

Politico

site , begun to recruit campaign staff and prepare fundraisers.

In the absence of serious opponents in the Democratic primaries, he can afford to take his time.
