– Coaches are usually only in the second row when honoring the athletes of the year in their home newspaper.

There is no separate category for them, and anyway they prefer to leave the stage to the active ones.

Peter Schlickenrieder knows both sides: After his silver medal in the sprint at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, the man from Schlierseer unsurprisingly also made second place in the adult athletes' choice (behind footballer Benny Lauth).

Even after the end of his career in the same year, Schlickenrieder remained loyal to the gala as a welcome guest.

Now he has returned to the ranks of those honored as national cross-country skiing coach with two surprising Olympic medals.

And to a certain extent unrivalled:

Absolutely deserved, said sports editor Sebastian Schuch.

“Relay silver with the women and sensational gold in the team relay – and that on his 52nd birthday.

It's no wonder that he's staying on as national coach for another four years.” Schlickenrieder wants to “put the success on a solid footing”, which he has already achieved to some extent thanks to the good World Cup results this spring.

Remember: When Schlierseer took over as coach, his athletes were far from the best in the world.

Probably only a few believed him to be able to achieve the successes that Schlickenrieder has made possible because of his technical, but above all because of his human competence.

It was not for nothing that he received the Bavarian Sports Prize.

The successful coach was not able to accept the special award of the athletes' gala in person: Schlickenrieder is currently on a well-deserved vacation.

Schuch announced that he would hand over the trophy to him next week at the upcoming ceremony by SC Schliersee.

The moderator was all the more pleased about the greeting by telephone from the national coach.

And that was, despite the great praise for the choice of athletes in the local newspaper, "not an order", Schuch assured wittily, before he gave Schlickenrieder the loudspeakers.

By then, at the latest, the listeners in the hall knew what the moderator meant by that.

Because the honoree freely returned the laurels to the organizers of the sports awards.

"Doing something like this over so many years deserves every congratulation," said Schlickenrieder.

The choice of athletes is a “great institution” to infect the youngsters with this “positive virus”.

The fact that he has now received a special prize as a trainer more than 20 years after his active time as a cross-country skier is a sign "that sustained struggle for success pays off".
