The police this evening (Monday) refused to allow Israeli flags and the Declaration of Independence to be brought in and waved in the procession that will be held at Zichron Ya'akov tomorrow evening with the beginning of Independence Day celebrations.

Following the refusal, an urgent petition was submitted to the High Court, and a short time later the police announced that "the flag of the State of Israel is a national symbol and we encourage its hoisting.

The police will not prevent or limit the waving of Israeli flags all over the State of Israel, including the planned event in Zichron Ya'akov."

In their petition to the High Court, the petitioners wrote: "It is unthinkable that the Israel Police would deprive its citizens of the right to use and display the official symbols of the state, including the state flag and the Declaration of Independence , on Independence Day, by claiming that they serve as signs of protest for them."

Following the incident, the commander of the area, sub-superintendent Shlomi Ben Shoshan, met with the organizers of the procession, in order to prevent the discussion at the High Court.

Tomorrow at 20:00 the celebrations of the 75th Independence Day of the State of Israel will officially begin with the opening of the beacon ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
