US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the feuding Sudanese generals
agreed to a three-day ceasefire
from Tuesday to try to end the fighting.
"Following intense negotiations over the past 48 hours, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to a country-wide ceasefire from midnight on April 24, which will last for
72 hours
," he stated. Blinken in a statement two hours before the truce took effect.
"During this period, the United States
expects
the Army and FSR to fully and immediately respect the ceasefire," it added.
The Secretary of State also indicated that the United States is working with its allies to start a "commission" that would be in charge of negotiating a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.
Blinken spoke earlier on Monday with his Kenyan counterpart about the Sudanese conflict and recently
increased contacts with the rival generals
, as well as with countries in the region and with the African Union.
Several countries carry out repatriation operations for their nationals or their diplomatic personnel present in Sudan, where the war between the Army and paramilitaries has been raging since April 15.
