Blinken announces 72-hour ceasefire in Sudan

A halt to the fighting was obtained after two days of negotiations between the generals of the two rival camps.


US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken announced on Monday that rival generals in the conflict in Sudan had agreed to a three-day nationwide ceasefire.

After intense negotiations over the past 48 hours, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have agreed to implement a nationwide ceasefire starting at midnight on April 24 (Monday 2200 GMT), to last 72 hours

The US Secretary of State further indicates that the United States is working with its allies and partners to set up a "

commission

" which would be responsible for negotiating a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.

Antony Blinken had spoken earlier on Monday with his Kenyan counterpart about the conflict in Sudan and has recently increased exchanges with rival generals, as well as with countries in the region and the African Union.

Many countries are carrying out repatriation operations for their nationals or their diplomatic personnel from Sudan, where the war between the army and the paramilitaries has been raging since April 15.
