Fuel taxation represents nearly 60% of the amount spent at the pump, a rate higher than the European average and significantly higher than the legal requirements.
To this tax particularity on the price of fuel is now added another French particularity.
The European Commission reports that a liter of unleaded 95 is sold in France at 90 cents excluding tax, compared to 82.5 cents elsewhere in Europe.
In other words, even if we remove taxes from the price equation, fuels still sell for more in France than elsewhere in Europe.
