The Dante project, a future classic on track

CRITICISM – Inspired by The divine comedy, this ballet choreographed by Wayne McGregor brings together Thomas Adès for the music and Tacita Dean for the scenography. Three names for a resolutely opulent production. A successful entry into the repertoire of the Paris Opera.


The Dante Project is one of the most ambitious creations that the choreographic scene has produced in recent years.

It also required a co-production between Paris and London.

Created this Wednesday at the Palais Garnier, the piece had been given a world premiere at Covent Garden in 2021. With The Dante Project, here is Diaghilev back from hell.

We apply the recipe of his Russian ballets.

The work was born out of three commissions from contemporary artists: Thomas Adès for the music, Tacita Dean for the scenography, Wayne McGregor for the choreography.

None of these three giants seeks to control the whole.

Everyone did their best, and opened the dialogue.

“We create to learn, to travel and not to know”, sums up Wayne McGregor magnificently.

Diaghilev would have applauded.

McGregor recalls that this definition is also, according to him, Dante's starting proposition on the threshold of hell.

It is a question here of evoking it without narrating it.
