Munich – After severe storms in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, further strong thunderstorms with heavy rain are to be expected on Monday (8 May). Especially in the west and south, however, the weather continues to be turbulent. "An easing of the weather situation is not in sight for the time being. This week it will remain wet and changeable. Rain falls again and again and there are also thunderstorms in between. Beware of floods and landslides," warns meteorologist Dominik Jung from the weather service Q.met at wetter.net. The thunderstorm cells hardly move from place and therefore cause flash floods, he explains. Just like on Sunday.
Severe weather in Germany: Heavy rain causes flooding
In Ratingen (Rhineland-Palatinate), the fire brigade said it had triggered a "special situation". A thunderstorm cell with heavy rain, small-grained hail and gusts of wind slowly moved over the city area on Sunday afternoon (14.30 p.m.). In a short time, due to the heavy rainfall, there were some spring floods, numerous streets were flooded and cellars were full of water. In Daaden, 30 people were evacuated from their homes. No one was injured, according to the Technical Operations Command (TEL). They were cared for in the community center and were able to return to their apartments on Monday morning. On Monday night, around 250 firefighters, police, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and the German Red Cross were deployed due to flooded roads and landslides, reports SWR.

Germany weather: Heavy rainfall accumulates in the west
From Emsland to Baden-Württemberg and in the Allgäu, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), individual thunderstorms will rise again on Monday. There can be small-scale heavy rain of up to 25 litres per square metre in a short time, as well as small-grained hail and gusts (60 km/h). According to the DWD experts, heavy rain lasting several hours is to be expected in some areas. Local storms due to heavy rain with up to 25 litres per square metre in one hour in the Eifel and the Black Forest.

- Bavaria: Isolated thunderstorms with heavy rain of around 20 l/sqm per hour and small-grained hail and gusts of around 60 km/h are likely in the western Alps and foothills.
- Lower Saxony and Bremen: From the afternoon until the first half of the night in the western part, there is a low probability of individual thunderstorms with heavy rain of around 20 litres per square metre.
- North Rhine-Westphalia: Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Locally heavy rain of 15 to 25 liters per square meter in a short time and strong gusts of around 55 km/h (Bft 7) as well as small-grained hail are likely.

"Therefore, please be vigilant today and in the coming days!" warns the weather expert urgently. Basements and houses could fill up quickly during these flash floods. There would be a danger to life if you were in the basement. On Tuesday, continuous rain is announced. It remains to be seen how the weather will develop in the next few days. However, it can already be assumed that May will probably be far too wet in many regions.
