THE QUESTION. On Saturday, May 6, a procession of ultra-right activists marched through the streets of Paris for an annual rally in tribute to a nationalist activist who died 29 years ago. Although controversial, this gathering had not been banned beforehand by the police prefecture, which justified itself by saying that no overflow had been deplored during the previous marches. A decision that provoked a reaction from all sides.
On Tuesday, May 9, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said she was shocked by Saturday's images, while Marine Le Pen condemned "inadmissible provocations". Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that he had asked the prefects to ban all ultra-right demonstrations in the future. "We will let the courts decide whether the case law will allow these demonstrations to be held," he announced. But can we ban demonstrations of this type a priori on these grounds?
