UN farce: Iranian ambassador appointed to senior position in anti-Israel body | Israel Hayom

2023-05-15T19:47:48.279Z

Highlights: The appointment comes in the same week as two people were hanged in Iran. The UN Human Rights Council has been accused of being biased in favor of Israel. The council was set up by the U.S. to promote human rights in the Middle East. The U.N. has been criticized for not doing enough to protect the rights of its citizens, including women and children, to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. It has also been criticised for failing to do enough to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases.

A farce at the UN: Iran's ambassador to the UN, Ali Bahraini, was appointed last week chairman of the social forum of the UN Human Rights Council, the biased body that regularly acts against Israel.

The appointment came in the same week that two people were hanged in execution for what was reported to be illicit activity on social media. This is a biased body against Israel, from which the US withdrew in 2018, until recently the Biden administration returned to it. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan regularly criticizes the body, and even the Prime Minister's Office attacked it earlier this year: "The UN Human Rights Council is a biased and influential body."

Following the puzzling appointment, which also caused discomfort among members of the organization, Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel told Israel Hayom that "the appointment of Ali Bahraini, Iran's ambassador to the UN, as chairman of the Social Forum of the Human Rights Council, is instrumental in the murder of innocents. This is a spit in the face of the victims of the ayatollahs' regime and of the countries of the democratic world.

"Just this week, the Iranian regime hanged two civilians for their social media activity, a crime that joins a series of heinous and murderous acts, including poisoning hundreds of schoolgirls, torturing dissidents with electric shocks and pulling out nails, severe sexual abuse and breaking limbs."

Gamliel, who follows the civilian side of Iran and only recently hosted the son of the deposed Shah of Iran in Israel, said: "Evin Prison is hell on earth, to which regime opponents are sent and tortured, and in many cases their fate is unknown. The free world must not stand idly by."

Last January, Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, said of the UN Human Rights Council that "this is one of the most distorted and anti-moral bodies in the world. The Human Rights Council is a body in which Israel has been extremely discriminated against for many years, a body in which anti-Semitic commissions of inquiry are established against Israel and whose moral authority Israel has never acknowledged."
