A red Porsche 911 is parked across the sidewalk in Erding. He receives the receipt in the form of a handwritten note on the windshield. The discussion on the Internet is slipping into xenophobia.

Erding – Admittedly, the driver of this car is apparently anxious to fulfill every cliché of his guild. In the center of Erding, he parks his bright red Porsche 911 across the sidewalk. For those familiar with the area: In the photo, the car is parked in front of the Stadthotel Erding and next to the Trattoria Dal Vecchio, of which tables and umbrellas can still be seen on the left. On the other side of the street of the "Lange Zeile" (that's the name of the street) you can discover the Gewandhaus Gruber (red house).

The cars opposite are parked in designated parking spaces. The place that the Porsche driver has chosen is not a proper parking lot. The fact that wild parking on the Erdinger promenade is not uncommon should perhaps also be mentioned for the sake of completeness.

Stranger writes a letter to the Porsche driver – in no uncertain terms

A stranger, who apparently has children, nevertheless vents his anger. He tucks a handwritten letter under the windshield wiper for the sports car driver, which has it all. The following text can be read on it in not quite clean spelling:

"It's a shame that people like you are born and my children have had to see that not everyone is nice and friendly."

"It's a pity you're in the world" – That's tough stuff. Unfortunately, it is not known how and whether the Porsche driver reacted to the letter. Nor did it matter whether there had been a personal encounter between the note writer and the Porsche driver during the parking campaign. So much for the rather banal case.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Erding newsletter.)

Mail from letter and Porsche triggers heated debate on the Internet

What is more exciting, however, is how quickly the discussion between the two images escalates and drifts into latent xenophobia. A Johanna took the photos and sent them to the Instagram account "notesofgermany", which is known for funny pictures of notes from large and small German cities and published these two pictures on Saturday morning.

Debate on the Internet on letter to Porsche drivers quickly slips into xenophobia

And immediately it starts. Several commentators were annoyed by the author's poor knowledge of German ("Hopefully the children will learn better German"). Others accuse him of sheer envy of the beautiful, red car. And then it quickly becomes even more abusive: "I think the driver has paid more taxes so far than her children will earn, given the grammar!!!! Why are their children in the world at all???" (Editor's note: Again, the original comment was taken verbatim, including spelling mistakes).

Sure, social media isn't the healthiest place to be. And Instagram can now keep up with Facebook in terms of discussion culture. Nevertheless, it is striking how many users jump on this narrative in a very short time: Poor foreigner with bad German writes uncouth letters to well-behaved, tax-paying Germans with a nice car that is not granted to him.

"No xenophobia to be seen here": Some users address comments

At least some commentators point to the latent xenophobic spin that the discussion has taken under the post. "No xenophobia at all to be seen here," writes one Instagram user ironically and another user adds: "Here they step right back down in the comments because the language does not correspond 100% to the correct German language. You Aryans."
