FLY (YOUTUBE)
As much as we missed summer – and with the heavy heat loads ahead, we'll probably stop missing it soon – it brings with it other, less desirable guests – the flies. Flies love heat and love to spawn in our kitchen in the summer when they search for sweet fruit juices.
In order to prepare ourselves well for their return this time, an expert on kitchens, insects and everything in between, shared 7 simple and inexpensive or complicated tips to get rid of the flies when they appear - and even prevent them from arriving in the first place. Here are the tips from Polly Shearer, a kitchen expert at Tap Warehouse, who revealed them in a conversation with The Sun:

DIY spray against flies
Refreshing mint, lemongrass leaves, and soothing lavender—the smells humans love so much, it turns out, are hated by flies. The expert says you can create your own natural fly deterrent spray by adding a few drops of each of these oils to water in a spray bottle. "I personally recommend lavender so the spray will leave your kitchen smelling fresh," she said. The spray should be sprayed throughout the kitchen throughout the day, which she says will prevent the flies from jumping in for lunch.

Baking soda powder
From gardening to housekeeping, baking soda seems to have become a convenient solution in almost every aspect of life. Now it turns out that this kitchen product is also an excellent solution for expelling flies. Polly explained: "Everything you put in your trash will rot. However, this process is accelerated during the summer months due to the hot weather. Decay attracts flies, insects and maggots, so it's important to clean and empty the bin more frequently during the summer."
To avoid the appearance of flies, you can sprinkle some baking soda powder on the bottom of your bin before putting in a new trash bag. "Baking soda is supposed to absorb any odor and liquid that leaks out of the bag," Polly explained.
Store fizzy drinks in the refrigerator
In addition to sweet sugar, fruit flies are also attracted to the carbon dioxide found in fizzy drinks. If left outside, kitchen flies may congregate in the area – especially if some of the drink is spilled on the countertop. "Be sure to wipe away any puddles and clean the empty bottles thoroughly to prevent fruit flies from being attracted to them," Polly said, "It's also a good idea to store your fizzy drinks in the fridge to keep fruit flies away."

Apple cider vinegar
Fruit flies are a blow. To get rid of them, all you have to do is fill half a cup with apple cider vinegar and cover it with plastic wrap and then punch small holes in it with a toothpick. "Apple cider vinegar attracts fruit flies. These will go through the small holes in the plastic and get stuck inside – until you release them outside your home later," she said, "It's also important to store your fruit in the fridge to prevent the flies from coming back."

Dirty dishes
When it's hot, it's hard to find the strength to wash dishes, but Foley says there's nothing worse than leaving a pile of dirty dishes next to or in the sink. She said: "In the summer, I recommend washing dishes as soon as possible to prevent flies from contaminating your dishes with bacteria and even laying eggs on them."

Food scraps
Similarly, flies are also attracted to food scraps—especially if the food is still warm. To prevent them from gathering around your lunch/dinner – as well as laying their eggs in your dishes – place leftover food in a bag or box that can be completely sealed.
Basil plant
Another smell that flies (and mosquitoes) are known to not particularly tolerate is the smell of basil - which makes basil an excellent kitchen plant. Polly explained: "Not only will this prevent the flies from getting inside, it's also great to use in a lot of recipes."
