With "Dr. Nice", ZDF has a new medical series at the start, until it continues with "Der Bergdoktor". After the first episodes this spring, the channel will soon shoot more episodes.
Ellmau/Flensburg – Since 2008, "Der Bergdoktor" has proven to be a true ratings guarantor for ZDF with every season. Millions of fans tune in to the doctor's series with Hans Sigl (53) and make a pilgrimage to the fan days in the Wilder Kaiser region. The next episodes won't be available until 2024 - but the new format "Dr. Nice" should sweeten the waiting time.
"New Hans Sigl": ZDF has with "Dr. Nice" next hit series at the start
If you look closely, you can see some parallels between "The Mountain Doctor" and "Dr. Nice" – especially between Dr. Martin Gruber and Dr. Moritz Neiss (Patrick Kalupa, 43). Both are tough and sympathetic doctors who like to appear without a doctor's coat and both focus on revealing paternity. Martin Gruber is actually the biological father of Lilli (Ronja Forcher, 26), the daughter of his brother Hans (Heiko Ruprecht, 50), and Moritz Neiss unexpectedly meets his daughter Lea (Maj Borchardt) at the beginning of "Dr. Nice".
The very different locations – the mountain village of Ellmau and the port city of Flensburg – aside, the similarities with "The Mountain Doctor" seem to have been quite deliberate in the development of "Dr. Nice". Because producer Stefan Raiser revealed in an interview with "teleschau" what was being sought for the leading role in the new medical series: "For a new Hans Sigl."
Hans Sigl's secret guest role in "Der Bergdoktor"
Since 2008, Hans Sigl has embodied the title hero Martin Gruber in "Der Bergdoktor". The exciting life of the country doctor inspires millions of loyal fans with every episode and has made his actor one of the biggest stars of the German television landscape. But what very few people know is that the role as Lisbeth Gruber's son is not Hans Sigl's first appearance as a mountain doctor. Ten years before he slipped into the white doctor's coat, he was already seen as a taxi driver in the popular series, which was still running on Sat.1 at the time and which focused on Gerhard Lippert, a completely different mountain doctor. Who knows – maybe one day an extra from the ZDF remake will be Hans Sigl's successor?

)The fact that ZDF has hit the bull's eye with this idea is likely to be proven by the figures of the two "Dr. Nice" episodes broadcast so far. As dwdl.de reports, the second episode reached 5.38 million viewers in April and also reached 14.49 million viewers in the target group of 0- to 51-year-olds. For a new series, this is an impressive result – which does not have to hide from the "Bergdoktor" ratings.
After a successful start: ZDF shoots new episodes of "Dr. Nice"
So far, there have only been two episodes of "Dr. Nice" to see – but an end is far from in sight for the attractive doctor. "That's the great thing and we're mega grateful for that," explained Patrick Kalupa in an interview with "Webtalkshow", "ZDF has already ordered two new episodes. I've already read the books." In July, he and his co-stars will shoot episodes 3 and 4 - and then possibly even more: "If the quota is good, then even a third will be added."
