YouTube: Google will remove inactive accounts... except those with videos

2023-05-20T17:58:34.077Z

Highlights: Google says it has no plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos. Rene Ritchie was arrested in recent days after Google announced it wanted to remove inactive YouTube accounts. The one who posted the first YouTube video 18 years ago has not published any other video since and has never reconnected (despite his 3.58 million subscribers) Google's new policy provides that from December 2023, any account that has been inactive for more than two years will be automatically deleted... except those hosting videos on YouTube.

Many Internet users were worried about seeing a whole section of web culture disappear with the removal of videos on YouTube. This does not happen

Don't rely on YouTube to delete that old video posted on the account you no longer have the password for. In charge of relations with content creators, Rene Ritchie certified on Twitter that Google had "no plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos", while the company wants to clean up about old accounts.

"We confirm that we do not intend to delete accounts with YouTube videos!" responded Wednesday on Twitter, Rene Ritchie, in a tweet spotted by BFMTV. The company executive had been arrested in recent days after Google announced it wanted to remove inactive YouTube accounts. This will only affect inactive accounts that haven't posted any video, Ritchie says.

"It bothers me that companies plan to completely delete personal content simply because someone has been gone for too long," said one Twitter user. The question arises all the more since YouTube, by its quasi-monopoly, represents an important part of the culture of the web.

As BFMTV reports, the one who posted the first YouTube video 18 years ago has not published any other video since and has never reconnected (despite his 3.58 million subscribers).

Google's new policy therefore provides that from December 2023, any account that has been inactive for more than two years will be automatically deleted... except those hosting videos on YouTube. Be careful, this concerns YouTube accounts, but also Gmail, Docs or Drive. According to the rules published by Google, an account is considered active from the moment there is a search on Google, watching a video or downloading an application via the Play Store.
