Mélenchon considers "possible" an end of the Nupes if the left leaves divided in the European elections

Highlights: Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI) said on Sunday that separate lists in the European elections would run the risk of an end to the Nutes alliance, concluded in May 2022. "It is possible," replied the candidate for the last presidential election. "I will defend the Nupes as much as necessary," said the leader of La France insoumise. But he called for it to be based on the "shared program" signed as part of the legislative elections.

"If there is no union in the European elections (...) why would there be one in the presidential election?", said Sunday the leader of the Insoumis, interviewed by 20 Minutes.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI) said on Sunday that separate lists in the European elections, the preferred choice of some left-wing leaders, would run the risk of an end to the Nutes alliance, concluded in May 2022. "It is possible," replied the candidate for the last presidential election, questioned by 20 Minutes on the hypothesis of an end of the alliance in the event that its four members (LFI, PS, EELV, PCF) each presented the lists to the European elections that will take place from 6 to 9 June 2024.

The Nupes is in jeopardy if it is no longer even an electoral agreement. If there is no union in the European elections, there will be no union in the municipal elections either. Why would there be one in the presidential election?", warned the leader of La France insoumise, believing that "the small interests of parties have limits", and recalling that LFI had proposed to the ecologists the head of the list in the European elections.

The leadership of the Greens, a party in which these elections have traditionally been successful, intends to put forward an ecologist list. The Socialists are calling for a debate in the autumn. "I will defend the Nupes as much as necessary," but the European elections "are a proportional vote in one round, one of the only elections where you can vote as you want," said Wednesday Marine Tondelier, boss of the Greens.

"Divisors will be punished at the ballot box"

Yes, we are different on Europe," said Jean-Luc Mélenchon, himself a former MEP. But he called for it to be based on the "shared program" signed as part of the legislative elections. "Who can want to miss the opportunity to come out on top and send an exciting signal to the whole of Europe? Dividers will be punished at the ballot box," he warned.

Behind his argument, the polls that in recent weeks place a possible single list Nupes neck and neck, or even ahead of the National Rally or Renaissance in the European elections. But on the left, opponents of a single list do not fail to point out that the same polls predict that four separate left-wing lists would ultimately send more MEPs than a single list, even if none could run for pole position. "I agree for a joint candidacy in 2027," repeated Marine Tondelier this week.

As for whether he ruled out "totally" running for the next presidential election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a three-time candidate who finished third in 2022, replied "no one can say that. In all circumstances, I will play a role."
