Excessive rainfall

The Israel Meteorological Service, which monitors weather phenomena in Israel, published a special analysis of last June, noting that "June was an exceptional month with three exceptional weather events that included widespread rain nationwide, thunderstorms, high temperatures, strong wind gusts and dust storms. Each event in itself was unusual for this month and the sequence of events was very unusual, and to this we must add a similar event that took place at the end of May."

According to the service, "The monthly rainfall amounts were not large and reached several millimeters, but they fell almost throughout the country, including the southern Negev and the Arava. This is an unprecedented phenomenon in terms of national distribution."

The service also notes that "in the first half of the month there were several days of scorching, and in one of them temperature records for June were even broken at several stations. At the same time, there were cooler-than-average days, especially in the mountains and inland, so in these areas temperatures in June were close to average. On the coastal plain, they were slightly higher than him. The first half of 2023 ranks eighth in the series of measurements since 1950."

The service notes that "rainfall in June is not unusual, and almost every year there is measurable rain at some stations. However, it should be emphasized that this year's rains fell throughout the country and almost all rain stations reported rainfall. Usually in June the distribution of rainfall is limited to parts of the country, and even during rainy June months such as 1992 and 2018, the rain did not reach deep south. In 1957, it also rained in the Arava and southern Negev, as it did this year, but then it did not rain in the northern and central coastal plains, so the nationwide distribution of rainfall in June of this year is unprecedented."

The service also notes that "during the month there were three combat incidents. The most significant was at the beginning of the month (June 1 to 2). In most parts of the country, with the exception of the mountains, more than 2 degrees Celsius were measured on the 40nd of the month, and values of 43 to 45 degrees Celsius were measured. In some areas, the measured values ranked second or third for June, and in some stations records were even broken. There were incidents of heavy (but less extreme) heat on the 9th and 17th of the month."
