Reims: when Jacquart champagne becomes a perfume

Highlights: The first part of a new series of vignerons, the "Vigneron" series, will be released in April 2015. The series is called "The Vignorons" and will be available in the UK and the U.S. for the first time in 2015. It will be on sale for £16.99 per bottle, with a limited edition of 1,000 bottles. The first series of Vignoirs will be published in 2015, and the second series in 2016. The second series will be launched in 2017.


The Jacquart Champagne house entrusted Grégory Piaud de Glencoe, perfumer in Aÿ-Champagne, with the task of creating a direct home fragrance.


As with Proust's "madeleine", which brings back unforgettable emotions and memories to the author "Du côté de chez Swann", the first part of "À la recherche du temps perdu", a vintage of champagne can also leave a strong emotional charge.

This is in any case the revelation that the Jacquart champagne teams had during the first tastings of the Blanc de blancs 2015, whose launch was formalized last April. "During the first tastings, before marketing, we used so many terms from the world of perfumery, including fresh colognes (citrus, zest, neroli, edelweiss, flower pastures...) that it pushed us to create our own olfactory signature," explains Joëlle Weiss, oenologist at Jacquart.

To underline the singular character of this Blanc de Blancs 2015, the Reims house called on Grégory Piaud de Glencoe, nose and only perfumer based in Aÿ-Champagne, in the Montagne de Reims, with his brand "Lampyre", to create an interior fragrance evoking the character and style of this cuvée.

For this great premiere, Grégory Piaud from Glencoe attended all the tastings to compose in his workshop for nearly nine months, thanks to an "olfathèque" of more than 800 scent extracts, the first samples that had to be evaluated, commented on and finally validated to obtain the ultimate essence.

"Champagne offers a very dense and very rich material, the idea was not to project the champagne into the bottle, not to try to trace at all costs the aromas of the cuvée but to be really in an extension to release a unique olfactory experience," explains Grégory Piaud of Glencoe.

This work of goldsmith which is close, in its precision, to the phase of blending a wine has given birth to 200 bottles of this indoor mist with fragrances of white flowers and citrus notes. They are not intended to be marketed but rather to engrave in marble an olfactory signature for the house of Jacquart and also to satisfy loyal customers, restaurateurs and distributors of the brand. And, who knows, on the eve of its 60th anniversary, which it will celebrate in 2024, the young champagne house may have the opportunity to treat itself to a new "madeleine".
