Until now I thought that my happiness, or, God forbid, sadness depended only on my mother, and although I was always a current affairs freak and there were years when I was even active, the state, with all due respect to it, did not harm anything if it turned out so that I was happy. After all, a person is close to himself. But that's it, it's over.
I noticed recently that most of my surroundings suffer from insomnia. I find myself on the phone with a friend at two in the morning, and the conversation is no longer about life itself, but about "the state" and what will happen, what will happen.
As I write these lines, I hear on the radio that the Association of Psychologists has published an open letter signed by thousands of psychologists claiming that the legislative process and the rift between the citizens of the country harms the mental health of the public.
So when did this break happen to me? When I realized I was living in a bubble. And that the anxiety about the changing attitude towards women in Israel is justified – we are going backwards.
Two weeks ago, I drove with a taxi driver on my way to another press conference full of pure escapism and struck up a conversation with him.

It started with the genre that is accepted today "we won the elections, sit quietly" and then to lighten the atmosphere I switched to a weather talk.

He: "Yes."

He: "I blew her away."
Me: Silent in shock
and then he began a manifesto:
"You have been confused and I hope that this government will sort you out as well. What is this nonsense ME TOO A good woman is a woman of the house and it is known. Want to get to work a bit, okay. But it is known that a woman by virtue of being has to take care of her husband and children. Some things will never change. And it can't be that when a man starts with a woman they turn him into a rapist. You got confused. No wonder there are so many gay people all of a sudden." (!??)
Me: "So what do you say that a woman is inferior to a man?"
He: "How come but a woman is the face, or as the religious say, the daughter of a king is in, and a man is the ruler. It's well known."
I'm cutting it short, because he had a lot of "it's known" I spare the readers. When I entered the press conference, a colleague asked me what happened because they must have seen it on my face, and her response - "Good morning you live in a bubble."

Shor Inaf While I am agonizing over all this, there is a bombardment of bills that are currently falling in the Knesset like poisonous rain. A Knesset member named Limor Sun Har Melech, the one who wears a kibble on her head, proposed dismantling the Authority for the Status of Women, an independent authority that has been operating for years and whose job is to monitor injustices, and to associate it with a politician who shames the female sex in almost every statement, who ministers something from May Golan. Until now, if a couple decided to divorce, they could apply either to the rabbinical court or to the family court. And here comes a bill from the government decrees to abolish this option, and that discussions regarding alimony and more will only be through the rabbinical court.
It is known that coercion produces a counter-movement. 99% of male babies born in Israel undergo circumcision. You can skip it if you want because there are (yet) no toddler trousers removal police here to check. On the other hand, in order to marry "legally" in the Holy Land, there are no alternatives. It's not that a graceful couple can climb the steps of City Hall and register for marriage. Only through the Rabbinate - which also means the nightmare of getting divorced through the Rabbinate. And even if you thought that you had bypassed this necessity, and married in Cyprus, you can get a divorce only through the Rabbinate. No way out.
I already see a trend in couples choosing not to get married – having a wedding with a dress and a buffet, but giving up on the obsessive religious establishment. I recently attended five weddings. Four of them without a rabbi (and without an envelope with cash for the rabbi), but with breaking a glass and wonderful texts from the person chosen to conduct the ceremony, which is no small matter. That's a statement.
I hope these are swallows that herald the change that may one day come when these dark days of insomnia, emotional stress and most of all wonder how on earth we got to this darkness.
