Benjamin Netanyahu is now waiting for two "Deus Ex Machina." Literally, it's an off-machine activity. In practice, this refers to a "miracle from heaven."
In the Jewish worldview, miracles are not to be trusted. But there is hardly a person in distress who does not imagine for a moment that such a possibility would suddenly emerge from heaven to his redeemer.
The move began today with a meeting of Isaac Herzog at the White House. Bibi hopes that the president will have to recommend honesty to Joe Biden, and that procrastination can be taken until November 2023, when the US election campaign will begin and with it the pressure on his government will lessen. The chances of success of the trick are zero.
This is because Netanyahu promised Biden (and the rating companies) that the judicial coup laws would be passed by broad agreement in the Knesset, not bears or forests. On the contrary, Yariv Levin and Simcha Rothman, impervious to Israel's deteriorating situation in the international arena, are intensifying their anti-democratic formulation.
Netanyahu's conduct is perceived as a lie, which is why Biden has developed a greater hostility toward him than the rough firmness shown by Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter towards Yitzhak Rabin.
Moreover, even if Herzog joins Netanyahu's chariot and the procrastination is carried out by November, Bibi will not benefit. Because the secular-Reform majority of American Jews support Biden anyway, and has distanced itself from the government in Jerusalem. Therefore, the White House's fierce demands on Israel will not jeopardize activists' support and Jewish money for the Democratic Party in an election year. The upheaval against Biden initiated by Bibi rests on chicken knees. He is indeed looking for "Deus", but his chances of finding it are slim.
Israel has already weakened. Evidence of this is already evident. Who would have imagined that Turkey would repair its relations with the United States without relying on the power of the Jewish lobby? And here it was, it all ended over Netanyahu's head when Ankara withdrew its opposition to Sweden's joining NATO.
Moreover, the U.S. is effectively maintaining a nuclear agreement with Iran, which has not received official recognition and does not take Israel's opposition into account.
Likewise, even Hezbollah's provocation on the northern border (which may be to the liking of the government, which is gaining strength in opinion polls at a time of security tensions) was fed by Hassan Nasrallah's accurate or erroneous assessment that Bibi-Biden relations are weakening, and that Washington will not rush to back Jerusalem and help it.
The second step is the threat of the reservists – headed by the pilots and members of Unit 8200 – to stop volunteering to serve in the IDF under a government that undermines democracy. I do not ignore the critical argument that the use of this measure is a double-edged sword, and will boomerang in the next round. In the situation that has been created, Israel resembles a seriously ill patient who receives a drug that is a dangerous drug for his recovery. This is "there is no Bodkin in danger," but in the future the outcome could be disastrous.
Netanyahu hopes that the rate of those who refuse to enlist will be low. In my estimation, the chances of his "Deus" coming true are again zero. Refusal can spread like wildfire. The history books are full of factual descriptions of how limited struggles escalate into huge wars, between peoples and between brothers. Netanyahu and his followers in the Likud believed that the arithmetic majority in the Knesset, in the crown of their parliamentary throne, was enough to do whatever they wanted.
Among the pages of history are mentioned the names of King David and Jeroboam ben Nevet and Oliver Cromwell and George Washington and Maximilian Robespierre and Joseph Garibaldi and Abe Lincoln, Vladimir Lenin and Mao Tse Tong and Martin Luther King, and many others. Reality does not stop, and leaders who base their rule on freezing the situation, on Standstill, find themselves like Nicolae Ceauşescu in front of his officers' bullets, or King Farouk of Egypt on a deportation ship.
Under these circumstances, the protests are renewed today in an effort to shut down the economy, and again I see no reason to be absent from the demonstrations.
