You have never read a report about the sun rising in the morning, nor about the fact that the sky is blue. But sometimes you have to deal with what is obvious, or less so, until a few months ago.
We are witnessing a growing phenomenon: reservists who declare that they will continue to serve in the reserves, no matter what the government decides. They repeat the ancient and almost sacred convention that they will not let politics enter the IDF.
These reservists issue letters by unit, attesting to themselves that they come from different backgrounds and positions. Some support the reform, some protest against it, but they leave the IDF out of the political cauldron. They pledge to continue to serve the State of Israel responsibly.
These letters came from many hundreds of current and former members of the flotilla, and from hundreds of veterans of the Egoz Patrol. This was followed by a letter from hundreds of veterans of the Paratroopers Patrol. The reservists of Sayeret Matkal also produced such a letter, as did members of the Research Division of Military Intelligence, and even the Special Operations Directorate. But this statement does not belong only to the elite units. On Monday, Meir Liush and Yinon distributed a petition of soldiers and reservists. In less than a day, some 75,<> people signed the document, which opposes rejection and pledges to remain loyal to a Jewish and democratic state. An impressive number by any standard. These letters bring back the soul, which has been somewhat stifled by the politicization of everything that was apolitical and unifying. They reassure those who have already begun to worry about the bloated Girls removal campaign. But the truth is that there is much more to it than that.
For years, we have been taught that we need to look upward, at leaders and elected officials. But it seems that today it is very worthwhile for Knesset members, from all factions of the House, to look to the people, to the signatories of the letters.
The title of the huge petition is "No divorce from siblings," as simple as that. The signatories not only wish to remind us that the IDF is the people's army, but that we are all here in one boat and that everyone must act responsibly out of a view of the good of the state, of all its citizens.
And this is the moment for elected officials to choose that voice over all the loud background noise. The ones who pick headlines and screen time on TV, the ones who rake in a lot of likes on the networks.
In recent months, we have seen Knesset members being captivated by the extreme, afraid of losing political power. Sometimes Knesset members make harsh statements themselves. So know you, dear MKs, that the silent majority does not want any of this. He didn't mean all-out war. He asks her to continue living his life in this country together.
The coalition must stop belittling its opponents and start listening to the pain of the other side, and in general, it needs to be less concerned with declarations and more concerned with the daily lives of citizens. The opposition, for its part, must internalize that it lost the elections, respect the people's choice, and engage in dialogue and dialogue, without being dragged behind the leaders of the protests, who are pulling it in extreme directions.
The people, in their tens of thousands, have proven that they choose the state over their personal preferences. Now it's the turn of elected officials to act responsibly.
