Defense Minister Yoav Galant met Monday night with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at UN headquarters in New York.
In their meeting, the two discussed the threats destabilizing the Middle East, chief among them Iran's actions against Israel by financing and arming Hezbollah, Hamas and other terrorist organizations.
Defense Minister Galant stressed to Secretary-General Guterres that the possibility of escalation on the northern border is increasing due to Hezbollah's actions that violate Israel's sovereignty. Minister Galant briefed the UN Secretary-General on Iran's growing involvement on the Lebanon, Syria and Judea and Samaria borders, and stressed that it is important to publicly condemn such actions by the UN.
Minister Galant stressed the urgent need for immediate UN intervention in reducing tensions by strengthening the freedom of movement of UNIFIL forces in the area, and implementing their mandate on the northern border. The Minister of Defense presented to the UN Secretary-General the deployment of Hezbollah positions along the border, and made it clear that the State of Israel would act against any violation of sovereignty and threat to the lives of its citizens.
The Minister of Defense expressed his appreciation to the UN Secretary-General for his personal work to resolve the issue of Israeli prisoners and missing persons held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and asked for his help in resolving the issue.
