The winning cheese, in case you were wondering, is Cabrales cheese, Spain's famous blue cheese, which comes from the eastern part of the Asturias region. In this case, it came in the form of a wheel weighing just over two kilograms and ended up selling for an insane $32,408, setting a new Guinness World Record.
The privileged cheese was sold at the farmer's market after having already won the title of best Cabrales cheese at the annual cheese competition in Las Medoles in Spain, where it is offered for sale every year.
The person who spent the considerable fortune to become the proud owner of the prestigious cheese is the owner of a successful restaurant called El Llagar de Colloto, who said that what inspired him to buy the cheese was the passion for the land and the hard work of those who produced it. For him, by the way, this was the second luxury purchase of Cabrales cheese, after he purchased the most expensive cheese that preceded it in 2019 for $22,129.
The high price of the cheese with an intense taste is the product of its complex preparation process. It has a long aging time. In the case of this particular cheese, the mother of the person who worked on its production revealed, it took no less than eight months of aging in a cave in the mountains at an altitude of 1400 meters.
