Tomorrow, the 2024-2024 school year is supposed to begin in schools, and as of closing time, it is highly doubtful whether high schools will actually begin classes, or whether the teachers' union will shut down classes.

Only this morning will high school students (10-12) know if they are returning to school or staying home. Negotiations between the teachers' union, the Ministry of Finance and the Education Ministry continued for hours yesterday, between progress and misunderstandings. Last night there was cautious optimism, but Education Minister Yoav Kisch also said that the teachers' union "will not distribute free gifts," and teachers' union chairman Ran Erez claimed that as far as he was concerned, there was a strike.

A raise of NIS 2,000 a month

On the agenda is an outline according to which teachers' salaries will be increased by NIS 2,000, in return for which teachers will be added one hour frontally (in front of the class), while on the other hand they will not teach three individual hours designated for students with difficulties, and the agreement will be for six years – but there was no agreement on the outline. Erez said that as far as he was concerned, today we would know definitively if there was a strike, and the organization would not wait until Friday morning.

Those who went out yesterday to demonstrate in favor of a wage agreement with the Ministry of Education in Tel Aviv are high school students who demonstrated for the routine they so desperately lack. The students held up signs against Ran Erez and chanted: "We want stability." "We will not agree to become a lost generation," the demonstrating students said. "We are COVID-19 generation students who were in lockdowns at home, who learned through squares on Zoom. Let us at least end the education system with dignity."

2.5 million students

The legal reform, the terror attacks, the scorching heat – they will all be forgotten tomorrow at 8 a.m. when Israeli students return to school. Already today they will prepare the backpacks, pencil cases and school uniforms. There are 2.5 million students in the education system, and about 181,000 first graders will start school tomorrow.

This is the first year that Education Minister Yoav Kisch has opened the school year. It's a tremendous system full of goodness, but also a lot of problems, mainly lack of budgets. Even now, there are still special education students who do not have appropriate kindergartens or schools because of a lack of frameworks. There is still a shortage of teaching staff, there is still a shortage of classrooms, and the gaps between strong and weak students are still high.

Starting today at 19:00, the Ministry of Education's Situation Room will operate to provide a response to parents, students and teaching staff regarding the start of the school year. The situation room in the capital will be attended by the Minister of Education, Minister of Education Haim Biton, Acting Director General Meir Shimoni and other members of the ministry's management. Alongside the situation room at headquarters, situation rooms will also be opened in districts that will be in constant contact with the main situation room at headquarters.
