Yom Kippur Prohibitions

During the Yom Kippur fast there are five main prohibitions:

Eating and drinking – during the fast it is forbidden to drink or eat.

Washing – it is forbidden to bathe or wash hands on Yom Kippur, whether in hot or cold water and even a small finger in water is forbidden.

• Lubrication – It is forbidden to apply oil or lotion to the body.

Lock the sandal – It is forbidden to wear a shoe made of leather. It is allowed to wear any other shoes, such as cloth or rubber shoes.

According to tradition, there are two main reasons that distinguish leather shoes from shoes made of other materials: a shoe that is not made of leather is less comfortable, and causes a feeling analogous to stepping on the ground, and is also not defined as a shoe but as clothing and clothing, and is therefore excluded from the prohibition on shoes.

Use of the bed – It is forbidden to have conjugal relations on Yom Kippur, and in addition, the laws of distancing between men and women must be observed during Niddah as explained at length in the laws of Niddah.

Lighting candles on Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is a holiday, and it is a mitzvah to light a candle in his honor, as the sages instructed to light a candle every Friday night and holiday for Shalom Bayit, so that there will be light and they will not encounter an obstacle (wood and stone in the language of the Sages).

The blessings that are blessed by lighting candles:• "Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the world, whom we sanctified by His commandments and commandments to light the candle of Yom Kippur"• "

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the world, whom we have lived,

sustained, and have come to this time."

Tips for fasting

Before fasting

- It is recommended to drink plenty of water before fasting, between 8-10 cups.

- Avoid eating salty/spicy foods (like snacks, pickles, salty cheese) – Salt causes thirst.

- Avoid foods/drinks that cause fluid loss like chocolate, spirits, coffee and tea.

How and what should you eat at a break meal?

- Eat a balanced meal, until satiety but do not overdo it.

Eat in the afternoon and not before the fast, so as not to feel heavy during the fast.

- Incorporate carbohydrates (such as rice and pasta), protein (chicken, meat, or fish), fat (tahini or avocado) and raw or cooked vegetables into the meal.

- Avoid dessert – cakes, fruits and all sweets and sugars that increase hunger and thirst afterwards.

- Vegetarians and vegans are advised not to skip the protein portion and it is recommended to eat stews with tofu, lentils, or chickpeas.

What to eat after fasting?

It is recommended not to eat a large meal immediately after the fast, but to start by drinking water, hot drinks and cake, cookie or slice of bread in order to replenish the fluids and sugars lost during the fast.

After about half an hour from the end of the fast, it is recommended to eat a balanced meal.

Pregnant women – A pregnant woman who feels she must eat is exempt from fasting.

Women who have had an abortion – Women who have had an abortion are exempt from Lent up to 7 days after the abortion.
