Against the backdrop of political and religious tensions in recent days, Minister Sofer was interviewed by the "Mood" newsletter and called for a halt to the legal legislation. "My mother would always tell me: 'Ofir, I'm in favor of you studying. But make sure the tuition fees aren't too high.' And today tuition fees are too high. And high tuition fees have to be paid. And if that means stopping the legislation right now, then yes, the legislation needs to be stopped," he said in an interview.

"We must stop at the moment and move forward afterwards with agreements. To spend the next two years, the next year and a half, in a completely different atmosphere. Build trust, calm the system," he added.
This is an unusual statement for a government minister, which earlier this year even led to the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Galant. The clarification that his words were misunderstood was not long in coming. The minister issued a statement in which he said: "Contrary to the headline published in my name in 'The Mood,' I support the continued advancement of the legal reform. At the same time, I will continue to work for dialogue and reach broad agreements in the continuation of the reform, and I pray that even the opposition will not reject our outstretched hand."
