In this context, the head of the investigative committee established to investigate the circumstances of the disaster revealed that "500 people were in the hall that caught fire and was built of highly flammable materials. The contact of the fireworks with these materials led to the outbreak of the fire."
The disaster struck the Assyrian Christian community in Nineveh Province, one of the oldest human communities in the Middle East, which has suffered much persecution in recent years from both the Shiite regime in Baghdad and the terrorist organizations operating in the country, especially ISIS, which controlled most of Nineveh province and its capital Mosul between 2014 and 2017.
