Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, arrived at a Delaware court on Tuesday to begin his trial. He is charged with illegally purchasing and possessing firearms while addicted to drugs. Another charge alleges that Hunter committed tax offenses.

Last July, the plea bargain signed between Biden Jr. and the prosecution was canceled after the judge in the case refused to sign the settlement, and the Justice Department appointed a special investigator with broad powers in the case. Hunter is expected to deny the charges against him during the court hearing, in what would become a historic event — for the first time in the United States the son of a sitting president faces a criminal trial.
In addition, Hunter's trial coincides with the impeachment process he began against his father, the president of the House, for allegedly aiding his son's business interests during his tenure as vice president. Alongside all this, President Biden is in the midst of campaigning for a second term in the White House, and his son's trial is already being used by political opponents to clash with the president.

During the hearing, the judge will present Hunter with the charges he faces and allow him to voice his opinion on the matter. Prosecutors in the case will also be able to request special conditions for his release on bail. Hunter initially requested to appear in court via live video conference, but his request was denied and he had to fly to Delaware.
