Highlights: National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has yet to condemn the spat at the pilgrims that stirred the political system. In 2017, when he was a lawyer, he represented girls suspected of spitting at a convent. "There is an ancient Jewish custom that when you pass by a monastery you spit to the side. Why criminalize it?", he said at the time. "Even if they spit at the monastery – which at least according to some religious rulings is not wrong," he added.

Why criminalize it."

Ben-Gvir told the judge at the time: "Even if they spit at the monastery – which at least according to some religious rulings is not wrong – it is not an offense of insulting religion as the police attribute to young women. Certainly when none of the monasteries were present, and in any case, this is not grounds for removing them from the Old City, because there are churches in other places in Jerusalem as well, so there is no logic in removing the minors, and in any case, removing the minors for months is unbalanced and illogical."
