A new four-part Netflix docuseries about soccer player David Beckham provides an intimate glimpse into the life of the British superstar footballer and touches, among other things, on one of the most talked about topics related to him: his marriage to pop star turned fashion designer Victoria Beckham and the major infidelity crisis that almost ended their marriage.

Beckham, 48, and Victoria, 49, married in 1999 and had four children, but the more than two-decade relationship between the Spice Girls veteran and the footballer has had its ups and downs over the years, with the biggest and most high-profile crisis of all coming in 2003 with the explosion of Beckham's alleged affair with Rebecca Luce, his personal assistant during his time at Real Madrid.

"The months after the affair exploded were the hardest of our lives," Victoria reveals in the fourth episode of the series titled "Beckham," which premieres Wednesday. "We felt like we didn't have each other anymore. It was the hardest time of our lives, because we felt like the whole world was against us."

Beckham added that he felt at the time that he and Victoria were against each other. "Up until Madrid it sometimes felt like it was us against everyone else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. When we were in Spain, it didn't feel like we had each other which is sad. It affected me a lot. Every time we woke up we felt there was something different. At that time, we felt that we were not losing each other, but simply drowning. I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes and wondered how I would manage to do it," he shared of the severe mental crisis he experienced at the time.

Beckham added that moving to Spain alone at first was very difficult for him as he had always been used to being part of a club and family since the age of 15. "Suddenly I was sold overnight and I'm in a city where I don't speak the language and I don't have my family," he said of the difficulties he experienced.

"Honestly, I don't know how we survived it. Victoria means everything to me. Seeing her hurt was very difficult but we are fighters, and at that point we fought for each other and for our family. It was worth fighting for what we had."

The marital crisis led Victoria to move with their children (at the time they were parents to Brooklyn and Romeo) to Madrid to be close to Beckham, but the transition was not easy for her and she found it difficult to see Madrid as her home. "Did I hold a grudge against David? Yes. To be completely honest then the answer is yes," she admitted. "That's probably when I was the most unhappy of my life. It was a nightmarish time. A circus," she added, adding that this July she will mark 25 years of marriage that survived all the crises and rumors and admits today: "I am happy and feel fulfilled."
