Passengers flying on an Australian Jetstar Airways plane found themselves in great panic on Wednesday due to turbulence that prevented the plane from landing at its original destination.

The plane took off at 8:30 a.m. from the airport in New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, en route to the local tourist town of Queenstown. The chaos began when the pilot lowered the plane en route to the local airport on a hillside.

During landing, the plane entered an area with unusual weather, one of the passengers defined the feeling as riding a roller coaster. At one point, the passengers, mostly young tourists, thought the plane was on its way to crash: "The gates of hell literally opened, everyone was just screaming and vomiting," Dylan Steele, 18, told the New Zealand Herald. The young passenger said he saw through the window of the plane his wing moving down and up as if it were a feather and he feared he would not survive this flight.

The airline itself confirmed that the plane had turned around due to the severe winds at the airport. The winds in question were in some parts of the South Island at a speed of 150 km/h.

In this context, a spokeswoman for the airline noted that its planes are capable of landing in such fast winds, but it was decided not to land at the airport again due to the very strong winds that prevailed there: "We really apologize to our passengers for the delay in their plans due to the severe winds at the airport. But passenger safety is our top priority. Our crews are now working to bring passengers to know quickly."
