The sirens and echoes of the numerous rocket explosions fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Saturday frightened many pets, who may have fled their homes in panic. The noises can cause overreactivity in many dogs and cats and even cause them to run uncontrollably, become anxious and even jump from heights, which can cause them to be injured.

To help you reassure them, Dr. Paul Slone, Certified Veterinarian and Director of Scientific Relations at Royal Canin Israel, suggests several ways to calm your dogs and cats – as well as what to do with them if they become anxious.

Don't let go: First of all, it's important to keep your dogs and cats in a safe place around you, preferably in eye contact. It is recommended not to take the dogs out for a walk outside the house, but in its yard (if there is one), and if there is no choice – it is better to go out to a closed yard and make sure to write down identifying details on the dog's collar, since in a moment of fear he may start running in panic and get lost. If you are taking your dog out for a walk (do so only if accompanied by an adult), be sure to put him on a leash and make sure the collar circumference is normal.

Lower the volume: It is recommended to reduce the animal's exposure to noise through a soundproof room, and prepare a relaxing and pleasant corner for the dog in the same room. Now is the time to check if there are any measures you have prepared for them in the past, such as ear protectors dedicated to dogs. Cats can also panic and try to escape, so make sure they can't jump from high places and get hurt as a result.

Petting and hugging:
After reducing exposure, you can try to pet or hug the dog, but if he does not respond immediately calmly, a strategy should be changed as petting can be interpreted as positive reinforcement of the dog's mental state, and actually intensify anxiety.

Reassure and convey confidence: Try to distract the dog by playing, convey confidence. Of course, in extreme cases it is recommended to consult with a dog trainer or zoopsychiatrist (veterinarian specializing in animal behavior) about the possibility of behavioral therapy with or without medication.

In addition, the Association of Veterinary Doctors for Domestic Animals in Israel has also issued recommendations and guidelines for the treatment of animals, such as practicing moving to the protected area in a calm and safe manner, preparing the protected space in the form of providing food and water to the animals as well (and medicines, if they need it), equipping themselves with means to remove secretions and using carrying cages when necessary. If you decide to move to a safe space, take your pets with you. If this is not possible, you can consult your veterinarian or charities to find a temporary solution.

It is worth noting that the treatment of dogs can reduce anxiety especially in children. Ofer Biton, Director of Canine Therapy at the Cypress Campus, explains that caring for someone else can distract from personal worries and pressures, both among adults and children.

A child who feels vital, has a role and responsibility, feels capable and confident. Furthermore, studies in children have shown that dogs provide stress relief and emotional support for children. Also, it is sometimes easier for children to express emotions such as fear or stress through another factor, and dogs can be an object of projection for these feelings.

And what should you do if you find a dog or cat that has escaped the alarms? First, contact your municipal hotline, and ask for a local authority veterinary inspector to scan its microchip.
