After days of waiting, the first Germans and their relatives fly back home from Tel Aviv in an operation organized by the Federal Foreign Office.

Frankfurt/Main - Lufthansa's first special flight from Israel landed at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday evening. There are 370 Germans on board. The special aircraft had taken off from Tel Aviv at noon. Buses were waiting in Frankfurt to take people off the tarmac. A second plane landed in Munich.

Special flights are to be used to bring Germans from Israel, which has been attacked by the Islamist Hamas, to Germany. Further flights on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office are to follow.

The Foreign Office said that a total of 950 Germans and their family members were able to leave Israel on Thursday. In addition to Lufthansa's four special flights on that day, a ferry from Israel to Cyprus was organized as a further exit option.

Lufthansa had promised to offer up to four flights each from Tel Aviv on Thursday and Friday. Two each were to go to Frankfurt and Munich. Departure times were scheduled for 13:30 p.m., 14:30 p.m., 16:00 p.m. and 17:00 p.m. (local time) on both days. The flights were expected to have a total capacity of about 1000 people per day. Dpa
