The Israeli police detained Dr. Amer al-Huzail, a candidate for mayor of Rahat and a resident of the city, on suspicion of publishing a post on Facebook relating to incitement and support for a terrorist organization and assistance to the enemy during wartime, against the background of the fighting taking place in the southern sector and the communities near the Gaza Strip.

Al-Huzail, former deputy and acting mayor of Rahat, was detained for interrogation on suspicion of incitement, support and identification with the Hamas terrorist organization. During the arrest, a mobile device in his possession was seized.

Al-Huzail allegedly supported the Hamas terrorist organization in his post, outlining on a map of Gaza City the possibility of IDF ground forces entering the Gaza Strip.

The suspect, in his 60s, has spoken out publicly in the past and himself said he had been warned by the Shin Bet that he was inciting the area. At a hearing held yesterday (Saturday) at the Beer Sheva Magistrate's Court, his detention was extended until tomorrow.

A police spokesperson for the Southern District of the Negev said that "the Israel Police will continue to act to locate and deal with those who incite to acts of terrorism and those who assist terrorist organizations, and those who praise these acts online and on the street during wartime."
