US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Sunday evening that the United States has appointed senior diplomat David Satterfield to manage the American humanitarian effort vis-à-vis Israel and Hamas. As part of his statement, Blinken announced that the purpose of bringing the aircraft carriers towards Israel was "to create deterrence and not to create provocation."
Satterfield, 69, is considered a senior U.S. diplomat who has served in a variety of capacities, including as U.S. ambassador to Lebanon under Bill Clinton and most recently as U.S. ambassador to Turkey. He is a veteran diplomat who is familiar with the Middle East and has held a number of positions, including in the Persian Gulf and Iraq, where he was an adviser to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
