Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected the new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday. Johnson was elected after nearly three weeks of chaos within the House without a permanent speaker, and also exposed divisions within the Republican Party.
Republicans nominated Johnson, 51, an evangelical Christian known for his conservative views. Among other things, he opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. The Speaker-elect also played a prominent role in the defense team that worked against the impeachment proceedings launched against Trump when he was president and supported the annulment of the results of the 2020 presidential election, including shortly before the Capitol riot.
Mike Johnson announced: We will deliver aid to Israel - and received applause
"We will restore confidence in this body and advance a conservative agenda, combating Biden's harmful policies while supporting our allies," Johnson said after his election. Johnson's appointment follows the impeachment of former chairman Kevin McCarthy over his collaboration with Democrats to avert a government shutdown.
"America's greatest ally in the Middle East is under attack and the first bill I will put before the House will be the aid package for Israel," he said in his first speech, drawing applause.
As noted, a permanent appointment as Speaker of the House of Representatives will make it possible to pass the aid package to Israel that Biden announced a few days ago, but also to hold a hearing for appointments in the US Foreign Service and to discuss budget issues, especially in light of the crisis created by the prevention of the government shutdown.
