A malfunction on the Karish rig caused a halt in the supply of natural gas to the economy today, Israel Hayom has learned. Since the Tamar reservoir is also shut down due to the war, this is a situation that could cause a shortage of natural gas in the economy if it continues for a long time. However, Energean, which operates the rig, says the fault has already been fixed, and the system has started operating, so gas will flow again in the coming hours.
The Tamar reservoir has been shut down since the beginning of the war in light of instructions from the defense establishment. The shutdown of the Karish reservoir due to a malfunction causes the energy sector to depend entirely on the Leviathan reservoir. Energy officials say that disruptions in electricity supply are not expected, but rather increased use of diesel and coal, which are more expensive and more polluting.
It should be noted that the electricity sector is prepared for emergencies and malfunctions by backing up all gas-fired power plants in Israel so that they can switch to diesel fuel in an immediate state of emergency.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said, "The technical malfunction in the Karish rig is being handled by the company. An assessment is underway regarding the return to full activity. The electricity sector is also prepared for such events, and therefore there is no expectation of a problem in the functional continuity of the electricity sector. The Natural Gas Authority at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is monitoring developments to local demand, in coordination with Noga and INGL."
