During a press conference Thursday night, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby responded firmly to a journalist who called Israel's actions in Gaza "difficult."
"The president said that 'innocent people will be killed, and that is the price of war.' You said similar things. Don't you think there are difficult actions? Iran even called on the president to apologize for his remarks," the journalist asked Kirby.

"What's hard is that Hamas uses civilians as 'human shields,' what's hard is to take hundreds of hostages and leave their families caring for loved ones, what's hard is massacring young people at a music festival. I could go on and on and on explaining what "hard" is, Kirby attacked.
"There will be more wounded and dead, this is war and it is a brutal and difficult thing, it does not mean that we should like it. Every one of the victims is a tragedy, and we are doing everything possible to prevent harm to innocent people," he added.
At the end of his answer, Kirby blamed Hamas, saying, "It would have been easier if Hamas had let them leave their homes and leave Gaza for those who are interested. But he won't let them do that. That's what's called "hard."
