The sad news was announced by several American media, including the Los Angeles Times, which specified that the actor had been found unconscious in his jacuzzi at his home in Los Angeles by his assistant and that he had not been able to be resuscitated by the emergency services.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department told AFP it responded at 16:10 p.m. (23 GMT) without confirming the name of the person who died.
No evidence of foul play has been found, according to unnamed sources cited by the Los Angeles Times and TMZ, which first reported the death.

They said the comedian had returned home in the morning after playing pickball (a game of rackets) for two hours. The comedian then allegedly sent his assistant shopping. When he returned two hours later, he reportedly found Matthew Perry unresponsive and called for help. For now, nothing is known about what the actor did just before he died. Investigations are currently underway to unravel the exact circumstances of his death. According to TMZ, it appears that the comedian drowned. Initial sources speak of a cardiac arrest, but there is no evidence of this at this time.

The actor was plagued by strong addictions to painkillers and alcohol that he had been battling for many years. He had attended rehabilitation clinics on several occasions. In his memoir published last year, he confessed to undergoing 65 rehab sessions, spending more than $9 million. He had undergone several surgeries related to his drug addiction problems, including a seven-hour operation on his colon in 2018, going so far as to say one day: "I should be dead".
However, according to TMZ, no drugs were found at the scene of the actor's death on Saturday.
Matthew Perry was best known for his role in the series Friends. He played Chandler, the joker and roomie friend with a scathing sense of humor. He played this role in 230 episodes and for ten years, from 1994 to 2004, on NBC alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer. The series told the story of six friends living in New York City in two adjoining apartments.
In June 2021, seventeen years after the last episode, TF1 broadcast a reunion party. The six actors met on the sets and told anecdotes from their experiences during the shoots. Matthew Perry appeared aged and very emaciated. In a recent television appearance, he surprised audiences by admitting that he suffered from severe anxiety "every night" while filming "Friends."

His playing partners have not yet reacted to the news of his death. Only Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice on Friends, has ever posted a tribute on her Instagram account: "What a loss! The world will miss you Matthew Perry. The joy you brought to so many people in your all-too-short life will endure. I feel so blessed by every moment filled with creation we shared," she wrote.
