The former district fire commissioner for Ebersberg, Gerhard Bullinger, has died unexpectedly at the age of 74. In 25 years in office, he shaped the local fire service like no other.

Antholing/District – The former district fire commissioner Gerhard Bullinger is dead. He died unexpectedly on Tuesday evening at the age of 74. This is confirmed by his successor Andreas Heiss. "The fire brigade was his life," says the district fire commissioner about his predecessor. Even after leaving office in 2014, the Antholinger (municipality of Baiern) never lost contact with the active members and was happy to be present and welcome at meetings.

Mourning for Ebersberg's former district fire councillor Gerhard Bullinger: "The fire brigade was his life"

For 25 years, a quarter of a century, Gerhard Bullinger was the chief firefighter in the Ebersberg district. Around 100 missions a year, that made around one million service kilometers with the blue lights on the roof. During his active time, he was involved nationwide as district chairman for Upper Bavaria and as deputy state chairman for the Bavarian Fire Brigade Association. Hardly anyone else has shaped the fire service in the region as much as he has.

District Administrator Robert Niedergesäß was dismayed by Bullinger's death on Wednesday and emphasized his great services to the safety of the district citizens in a first reaction to the EZ: "Gerhard Bullinger will always be remembered as an exemplary firefighter with the highest sense of responsibility and very great warmth!"

(By the way: Everything from the region is now available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.)

Catastrophic floods in Glonn: Gerhard Bullingers proves himself as a crisis manager

To name just one of countless examples, Bullinger proved his cool head in operations most impressively during the disaster in the context of the flood of the century in Glonn and Moosach in 2002. He coordinated the rescue and relief operations, showed presence on site and in the media, sometimes nationwide. "Although, as a Glonner at the time, he himself was affected," said his successor Heiss. And he adds how important it was for the long-time professional to work with young talent: "He was someone who always gave young people a chance." Gerhard Bullinger has put down such deep roots in the district as a popular firefighter that only a few people know that the native of Karlsruhe and raised in Munich only came to the Glonn fire brigade by chance via a Spezl.

In recent years, the former district fire commissioner has dedicated himself to sports, but above all to his family. "None of this would have been possible without their support," he once told EZ about his time as a firefighter. Gerhard Bullinger is mourned by his relatives. And hundreds of volunteer rescuers, among whom he had always felt at home.
