The head of Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliwa, spoke yesterday (Tuesday) about the war that has been going on for almost a month and repeated his message from last week.
"Military Intelligence under my command failed, and did not fulfill its most important mission – warning of war. As head of the organization, I bear the ultimate responsibility for this, as I have emphasized since the first day of the war," Haliva said.
"We are dealing with enemies from the north and east, from near and far. Military intelligence personnel from all systems – collection, research, operations and headquarters, in the field, in assemblies and bases – are key partners in the campaign, defense and offense.
"This is a war of no choice. It is not an existential war. The existence of the State of Israel is not at stake. However, this is a war over how we exist here. On the paths and fields, on routine life, on kindergartens and schools, and on our ability, that of our children and grandchildren, to live in our country in security, peace and freedom for generations to come."
This is a message that is not entirely consistent with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's words a few days ago. Netanyahu referred to the war as the "Second War of Independence" and an "existential challenge to Israel."
