G7 leaders agreed on international guiding principles on artificial intelligence (AI) and a voluntary code of conduct for AI developers as part of the Hiroshima process on AI.
The European Commission welcomes the agreement, specifying that the principles adopted and the Code of Conduct, which will be reviewed and updated if necessary, will complement, at international level, the rules dictated by the European AI Act, which is being finalised. This is stated in a note from the EU executive.
The eleven guiding principles provide guidance to organizations that develop, deploy, and use advanced AI systems, such as foundation models and generative AI, to promote the safety and trustworthiness of the technology. The guidelines include a commitment to reduce risks and abuses and identify vulnerabilities, encourage responsible information sharing, report incidents, and invest in cybersecurity, as well as a labeling system to enable users to identify AI-generated content.
These principles, based on the results of a stakeholder survey, in turn served as the basis for the compilation of the Code of Conduct, which will provide detailed and practical guidance for organisations developing AI. The voluntary Code of Conduct will also promote responsible governance of AI globally. For President Ursula von der Leyen, one of the signatories of the G7 leaders' statement issued by the Japanese G7 presidency for 2023, the principles and code of conduct on AI "reflect the EU's values to promote trustworthy AI". "I call on AI developers to sign and implement the Code of Conduct as soon as possible," he added, highlighting the role of the EU, "already at the forefront of the legislation with the AI Act," in "defining guardrails and AI governance at the global level."
The G7 Hiroshima AI Process was established at the 19 May 2023 summit to promote guardrails for advanced AI systems globally.
The initiative is part of a wider range of international discussions on AI guardrails, including the OECD, the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) and in the context of the EU-US Trade and Technology Council and the EU Digital Partnerships.
