Judicial reserves: 14 retired judges will return to office to support the load | Israel Hayom

Highlights: 14 retired judges will be appointed at the request of the Supreme Court. The appointment will be under the definition of "associate judge" and will therefore be possible without convening the Judicial Selection Committee. According to the law, the Minister of Justice has the authority to reinstate a judge who has reached retirement age. The committee members have 45 days to submit reservations on the matter. It was also announced that the President of the National Labor Court, Judge Varda Wirt Levana, intends to appoint two additional associate judges.

The Israeli judicial system is aligning itself with the situation and preparing for what is to come. In a joint statement by Acting President of the Supreme Court, Justice Uzi Fogelman, and Justice Minister Yariv Levin, the two announced their intention to appoint 14 associate judges to the courts and labor courts.

An associate judge is a judge who has served as a court judge and has reached retirement age. According to the law, the Minister of Justice and the Presidency of the Supreme Court have the authority to reinstate him as an "associate judge." In this way, it is possible to increase the number of judges without convening the Judicial Selection Committee.

A notice given to the members of the committee mentioned a list of 12 judges whom the Acting President of the Supreme Court and the Minister intend to appoint associate judges in the courts in the Tel Aviv, Central, South and Haifa districts.

It was also announced that the Minister of Justice, in consultation with Labor Minister Yoav Ben-Zur, and the President of the National Labor Court, Judge Varda Wirt Levana, intends to appoint two additional associate judges to the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Regional Labor Court.

According to the provisions of the law, the committee members have 45 days to submit reservations on the matter.
