The people of Garching are getting a new fire station. The topping-out ceremony is planned in a year's time, and the cost calculation is currently 28 million euros.

Garching – With the sinking of the time capsule with jet lance, newspaper and photo of the ground-breaking ceremony, the foundation stone was laid for the new fire station in Garching with the address An der Feuerwache. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy in two years, fulfilling a decades-long promise.

It still takes a lot of imagination, because apart from a huge hole with a few green pipes, a crane and the usual construction equipment, there is not much to see. "For decades, various mayors have promised that the Garching fire brigade will get a new fire station," said Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann (SPD). The first spatial plan was drawn up in May 2016, followed two years later by the design competition and the award of the architects' contract. In 2020, after the city council released its approval for the design and cost calculation, the building application was submitted. Due to the rapidly rising costs, the city council imposed a cost cap of 23 million euros, but this could not be maintained. "The goodwill was always there," emphasized Dietmar Gruchmann. He, too, had to admit that he had leaned a little too far out of the window when he announced during his term of office that the 150th anniversary celebration could be celebrated in his new home. "Unfortunately, it didn't work out", but at least the groundbreaking ceremony in June and now the laying of the foundation stone will take place in the anniversary year.

It is truly a milestone celebration for an urgently needed building, whose cost calculations are 28 million euros with 13 parking spaces, warehouse, washing hall and training tower. Already at the open day in October, it was also apparent to the visitors that the house in Hüterstraße is too small for the extensive equipment for the fire brigade to cope with its tasks. These are becoming more and more frequent due to the continuous growth of the city, the two motorways, the federal and state roads as well as the industrial park and the research campus.

The topping-out ceremony is scheduled to take place in a year's time. First, the floor slab is concreted and then the construction starts upwards.
