Highlights: "Hamas must be destroyed": Habeck sends a clear message to Greens in new video speech. "Hamas is destroying the process of peace in the Middle East," he says. The speech by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habecking had been recorded beforehand. Habecker's appeals are likely to be understood as a hint and a decision on the direction of the Greens. The Greens have not yet met with full approval with the Foreign Minister caught off guard by his initiative. All diplomatic efforts are aimed at making that happen.

New video message: After his speech on Israel, Robert Habeck goes one step further and sets the course for the Greens in the Israel war. Will Baerbock like that?

Berlin – Foreign policy guideline from the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs: Robert Habeck (Greens) has spoken to his party's conscience and called for unconditional solidarity with Israel's course in the war against Hamas. The attack by the Islamist terrorist organization is a "declaration of war on the civilized world" and requires a "necessary consequence from Israel," the minister said in a new video message to the party base, then added: "Basically, Hamas must be destroyed because it is destroying the process of peace in the Middle East."

War in Israel: Robert Habeck comes up trumps with new video message – destruction of Hamas demanded

The speech by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck had been recorded beforehand. On Saturday, he addressed the video message on Hamas' war in Israel to the state delegates' assembly of the Rhineland-Palatinate Greens, who had met in Saarburg.

Much-noticed speech on Youtube: Habeck is not the first time he has expressed concern about Israel's war

Most recently, Habeck had triggered an enormous response with a similar video message against anti-Semitism and for solidarity with Israel and received a lot of encouragement. In the speech, which the ministry had distributed on X (formerly Twitter) and which has since been broadcast thousands of times on YouTube, the Green politician denounced anti-Semitic attacks in Germany. He called for "a tough political response" and called on Muslims to distance themselves more clearly from anti-Semitic statements and actions.

Anti-Semitism in Germany: Habeck speech overshadowed by pro-Hamas demonstrations

In his speech on the war in Israel, Habeck primarily aimed at the waves of hatred in the migrant milieu. Many supporters of the Islamist Hamas took to the streets in Germany again at the weekend. On Friday evening, 3000,<> pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in Essen, including many Salafists, who called for the destruction of Israel. On Saturday there was a big rally in Berlin. Habeck was also concerned that activists from the left-wing party spectrum and from the environmental movement had also shown themselves to be rather hostile to Israel.

For this reason, Habeck's appeals are likely to be understood as a hint and a decision on the direction of the Greens. On Saturday, the Minister of Economic Affairs once again specified his position. "The Palestinians also have the right to their own state," the Green politician clarified. The two-state solution is the right political response. Hamas, however, has no interest in such a solution.

Habeck on the war in Israel: Hamas is working "with a big lie of mistaken identity"

"It is not fighting for the Palestinian people to have their own state. She fights for war. It wants to enforce the war and the destruction of Israel, which of course will never take place, but will also bring immeasurable suffering to its own population," he was quoted as saying by the dpa news agency. Hamas is working "with a big mistaken lie" when it presents its actions as a political offer: "It is not a political offer, it is a declaration of war on the civilized world."

Of course, Israel must confront Hamas, Habeck said. In doing so, Israel is also bound by international law and is obliged to minimize civilian casualties and comply with humanitarian standards. "But that's what they do, or they will do. All diplomatic efforts are aimed at making that happen."

Bad news for Baerbock: Foreign Minister caught off guard by Habeck's speech on the Israel war

But why the Minister of Economic Affairs is now repeatedly making his foreign policy position clear remains his secret. Even his first initiative is said not to have met with full approval within the party. While the speech, according to media reports, had been coordinated with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and perhaps also with FDP party leader Christian Lindner, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) is said to have been surprised by the news of the first video message.

Since the botched chancellor candidacy, Baerbock and Habeck are no longer considered the very best allies. While the foreign minister in New York had to justify the criticism of Germany's abstention on the Israel question in the UN, Habeck came up trumps on the home front with a much-noticed speech against anti-Semitism and even earned praise from the opposition. Baerbock is said to have judged this as gross foul play. (jkf/dpa
